Keys to communicating with those who have dementia

Several posts ago I was discussing communication with those who have dementia. I was saying that sometimes you as the communication facilitator need to find the right words for him. This may be frustrating at first for both you and the person with dementia. However as time   goes on and you as a careful observer see the persons habits and routines, the communication becomes easier.

Then I said that I will reveal how to get a person with dementia to understand you soon.

So how do you get a person with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia to understand you?

First no matter how impaired the person is, treat him with all the respect you would anyone else. He is an adult and deserves to be treated that way. Do not use baby talk or speak to him as if he were a child. People with dementia do not respond to that.

What do they respond to?

Next time I promise
