Another great strategy for relating to those with dementia

Have you ever heard if the KISS theory. That is keep it simple sweetheart. Some people use another word for sweetheart, but I want to be nice.

This practice really applies when you are trying to communicate with someone who has dementia.

Only ask one simple question at a time. You may have to simplify the question even further if the person with dementia looks confused.

You may have to anticipate what the answer might be and then give this person a choice.

You may be better off asking questions that can be answered with “Yes” or “No”.

You may have to rephrase the question into statement form to figure out what the person with dementia is trying to communicate.
