Are activities important for those with dementia?

picture-004nd.jpgIf you have been following this blog, you know that activities are extremely important for those with Alzheimer’s disease, related dementias, and all others residing at long term care facilities. In fact you know activities are important for all people in general when it comes to staving off memory loss and preventing us from getting Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. At least activities will delay the onset of these diseases and will slow down the progression of dementia.

Many experts say that therapuetic activities bring joy and purpose to the lives of those with dementia and allow them to hold onto their remaining cognitive skills longer.

So then why am I bringing this up?
I am discussing this now because National Activity Professionals Week will be celebrated January 18-23, 2009. This week was created to give honor and recognition to those dedicated individuals who contribute so significantly to a resident’s quality of life.

When we talk about residents, we talk about residents in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, independent living commumities as well as those taking advantage of adult day care. Let us not forget the many caregivers living at home with a loved one(s) who have dementia. They provide these indivduals with meaningful activities from sun up to sunset and beyond

So join me in celebrating National Activity Professionals Week and saying YES to activities for everyone
