Maintain your brain:Prevent dementia

Studies have shown that certain kinds of mental activity keep your brain sharp thereby decreasing your chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease and/or a related dementia.

The curious thing is that the same mental activity does not have the same effect on everybody’s brain. What you need to do is challange your brain. Therefore if you are a writer, writing in your leisure time does not really challenge your brain unless you are doing some complex research in conjunction with your writing.

If you do mathematical computations as part of your job then doing math related activities in your free time will not have a profound impact. Do not get me wrong doing like activities in your free time is better than doing mindless activities such as watching TV or listening to music.

However to get maximum benefit from brain stimulating activities, do things that you normally do not do.
Take a class in a subject you feel you are not that good at, but have some interest in.
Paint if you do not consider yourself to be the artsy type.
Write if you do NOT do that as part of your daily routine
Learn a foreigh language
Find new and creative ways to remember things
Do crossword puzzles, word searches, sodukus, and alike that are hard but not impossible.

You get the picture  ?!?    RIGHT!!

Crossword and logic puzzles are both good ways of challenging your brain, as is playing such games as scrabble.

Great blog on challenging subjects. RE: activities.
Activities also help maintain or increase self-estemm. They also can be times of jopy and gratitude which both help the brain. Ditto if they make someone laugh.
Some activities can help a person feel worthwhile. Elders crave structure and routine, however occassional new games can be fun. Activities as simple as playing catch, or throwing hoops, help coordination and neurological development.

Love you blog! I followed your suggestion. Mary MacIntyre www.lifetipsdaily.com
