Making sense of oxidative stress and dementia
The answer is anti oxidants. In order to combat oxidative stress, the body produces anti-oxidants to defend itself. The anti-oxidants neutralize the free radicals that can do harmful things to cells in our body. As I said before, it is thought that the brain attacks free radicals there with the formation of plaques and tangles if there are not enough anti-oxidants to do the job.
Obviously I have simplified what happens.
It is not clear if the plaques are a by product of oxidative stress or they form on their own.
